Imagine your baby or grandchild born three months premature and weighing less than four pounds.
Or entering the world not with a welcoming cry, but nearly lifeless, with the umbilical cord wrapped around your little one’s neck, arms and legs.
Envision spending more than two months on bed rest at the hospital because of problems with your pregnancy. When the experts who are carefully monitoring you and your baby determine a Cesarean section is necessary, you’re whisked to the operating room. Your infant arrives eight weeks early and needs special medical care. Fortunately, that care is available just down the hall.
In real-life cases such as these, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center provides tiny infants and their parents with expert, compassionate care and a peaceful, healing environment.

Exponential impact
Over the past six years, HonorHealth Foundation’s annual NICU High Tea, established by patient and NICU mom Stacy Lovell, has raised more than $1 million for the tiniest and most fragile patients we serve.
A small example of what your generosity has provided includes:
- New Omni Beds, simulating the mother’s womb for infants who require warmth and protection from being born prematurely.
- Artic Sun cooling blankets, which cool infants with great precision to protect their brains from injury.
- Snoo Sleepers, medical devices known for their ability to keep sleeping babies safely on their backs. These devices were purchased specifically for newborns with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), a condition that affects newborns who receive opioids through the placenta during pregnancy.
- A simulation lab was added to our educational track for staff. This lab allows them to practice caring for the premature population in a controlled environment.

As a Level III NICU, HonorHealth provides advanced care for newborns of any gestational age.
The expert doctors and nurses of this unit have cared for babies as small as 1.01 pounds at 25 weeks gestation and as young as 24 weeks gestation at 1.5 pounds.
The 28-bed NICU features state-of-the-art equipment and a team of experts who provide 24-hour in-hospital care, coverage not available in every hospital. The NICU is staffed by:
- Neonatologists (physicians who care for premature or sick infants)
- Neonatal nurse practitioners
- Specially trained nurses
- Specially trained respiratory professionals
The NICU allows the community’s most critically ill newborns and mothers-to-be with high-risk pregnancies to receive high-quality care close to home. Our family-friendly policies encourage parents and families to remain close to their newborns.
Many of our NICU nurses have earned RNC-NICU certification, meeting strict experience and testing requirements that establish them as expert high-risk neonatal caregivers.
