Finding answers, restoring hope In July of 2024, a young mother’s life was shattered when her body began to betray her in frightening ways. Her heart would race without warning. Her blood pressure would spike and crash. And she would lose consciousness, sometimes unable to eat, drink or keep medications down. Despite countless emergency room visits, specialists, tests and scans, no one could explain what was happening. Fear and exhaustion set in, and Chalet’s hope began to fade. That all changed when she was referred to HonorHealth’s Integrative Medicine program. From the first visit, she experienced something she hadn’t felt in a long time. She was truly heard. Dr. Singh-Karnik listened carefully to every symptom, every fear, every connection that others had dismissed. She asked new questions and suggested options that no one had ever discussed. When Chalet shared her belief that her episodes were linked to her menstrual cycle, the doctors followed that lead. Working collaboratively with Dr. Hackenmiller, the team ordered the right tests, asked the right questions and finally uncovered the answer. She had polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). With a clear diagnosis came a comprehensive, personalized care plan. A plan that addressed her entire body, not just isolated symptoms. Through nutrition counseling, lifestyle changes, integrative therapies and targeted medical treatment, she began to heal. She was very sedentary before her diagnosis. Today, she exercises regularly, follows an anti-inflammatory diet, makes better lifestyle choices and most importantly, feels better than she has in years. “I’m a better mom, a better wife and a better employee,” she shares. “Having a name for what was wrong with my body was empowering. I was ready to give up. I owe Drs. Singh-Karnik and Hackenmiller everything. I’ve done nothing to deserve this kindness and they’ve given it so freely. They gave me my life back!” Chalet credits HonorHealth’s Integrative Medicine program with saving her life. For patients like her, philanthropy makes this care possible. Through the kindness of donors, patients like Chalet who may feel lost in the medical system, can finally find answers, compassion and hope, often when they need it most. She concludes by saying, “There are so many women who are dismissed, misdiagnosed or told it’s ‘just anxiety.’ Integrative medicine is what gave my kids their mom back. Your donations truly give life!”
From small gestures to big impact: Girl Scouts bring holiday magic to pediatric patients During the holiday season, a local troop from Girl Scouts-Arizona Cactus-Pine turned compassion into action by joining together for a special cause — bringing joy and brand-new toys to children in the pediatric unit at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. And it all started with a friendship bracelet.
With a basket full of friendship bracelets done, the girls began collecting toys sure to brighten the days of pediatric patients, from board games and Barbie dolls to huggable stuffed animals and art supplies. The troop delivered the toys to the pediatric unit at Shea Medical Center on December 18. There, they had an opportunity to meet hospital leadership, learning more about careers in pediatric health and the patients who receive personalized, quality care in HonorHealth hospitals. In true Girl Scout spirit, some asked how they could support their friends and family members who are sick — small reminders that philanthropy and service to community live within even the youngest members of our community.

Gifts that generate income: Charitable Gift Annuity and Charitable Remainder Trust Did you know that you can support the HonorHealth program or Fund of your choosing, and receive annual payments to you — or someone you designate — for life? Or perhaps you're concerned that stock market fluctuations or an uncertain real estate market will drop the value of your assets, or that capital gains tax will take too large of a bite out of the sale of an appreciated asset. For situations such as these — and many others — a solution might be readily available in the form of a Charitable Gift Annuity or Charitable Remainder Trust, and HonorHealth Foundation has the expertise to help you plan your future with a solution tailored to your unique financial situation. Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) With the CGA, a donor transfers cash or property to HonorHealth Foundation, and in exchange receives fixed payments for life. The donor can receive an immediate income tax deduction for the charitable gift portion of the annuity, and the payments received may be partially tax-free. If appreciated assets are donated, there may also be savings on capital gains tax. Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) While a CRT is in some ways similar to a CGA — the CRT also provides payments to the donor — there are significant differences. With a CRT, cash, stock or other assets are used to fund a trust from which annual variable income payments are made to the donor (or other trust beneficiaries) for the lives of those named in the CRT, or for a fixed term up to 20 years. After all the trust payments have been made, what remains in the trust is then used to support the HonorHealth program of the donor's choosing. The CGA or CRT can offer many potential tax benefits, but either option requires thoughtful guidance. For that help you can count on HonorHealth Foundation's highly experienced Planned Giving team. There's still time to join the Desert Mission Milk Drive! HonorHealth Foundation and the Dairy Council of Arizona have teamed up for the third annual Adopt-a-Cow milk drive, benefiting HonorHealth Desert Mission Food Bank. Now through National Milk Day — Sunday, January 11 — make a milk drive donation and 100 percent of the funds will go to Desert Mission Food Bank for milk to distribute to families in need in the community. Inspired by the Girl Scout promise of friendship and giving back, the troop first decided to spread holiday cheer by stringing together colorful bracelets with encouraging messages for pediatric patients. But as the girls learned about the challenges young patients face, their compassion turned to ambition and an effort to donate to the HonorHealth Foundation Holiday Toy Drive.
We’re deeply grateful to these inspiring Girl Scouts, their families and every donor who helps make stories like this possible. With help from the community, the 2025 Holiday Toy Drive raised more than $11,000, which will reach young patients throughout our entire hospital system.
