October 2024

Jared A. Langkilde, MBA, CFREAhhh, October!

Here in Arizona, October signals the end of summer but not quite the start of fall. It’s an exciting time of year for the Foundation. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming fall events, like the Morning of Gold fundraising breakfast for Desert Mission, a legacy social service organization to feed the hungry, and to provide care services for both young (infants) and old (elderly with dementia, etc.) who have financial need as part of HonorHealth’s historical Lincoln family roots.

Not only is this event a lot of fun, but your participation helps support Desert Mission’s work to drive better health and well-being in our community and especially for our vulnerable neighbors. To learn more or register, visit the Morning of Gold website.

You may have seen the recent news that HonorHealth has assumed operations of multiple Steward Health Care facilities in Arizona. We are very excited to be expanding our services into Mesa, Tempe and Florence. HonorHealth has a strong track record of patient safety and experience, clinical excellence and top tier employee and physician engagement. We look forward to connecting the Foundation with these communities as well, to understand the needs that philanthropy can help serve.

We have much to celebrate as we continue to expand on our mission to serve the health of our communities. Speaking of celebrations – to those of you celebrating Rosh Hashanah – we wish you and your family a blessed and healthy New Year. Shana Tovah!

Thank you for your trust in us and for your generosity to help us find cures, save lives and transform healthcare!

In gratitude,

Jared A. Langkilde, MBA, CFRE

Donor Spotlight: Ralph and Teresa Yanello

A special bond, a passion for giving back

Ralph and Teresa Yanello are soulmates with a connection that began 45 years ago in Northern California. A consummate entrepreneur, Ralph combined his love of law and business, establishing a groundbreaking law practice that made legal help accessible and affordable for all.

While building this and other successful businesses, Ralph and Teresa never neglected their well-being and commitment to fitness. Despite working seven days a week for many years, their regular workout routines counteracted the stress and pressures of entrepreneurship.

It was that lifelong dedication to pride-worthy physical health and Ralph’s goal to live to be 100 years old – or older, that attracted the couple to HonorHealth’s Integrative Medicine Program.

While genetics contribute approximately 30 percent of the risk for chronic disease, the remaining 70 percent is the result of diet, lifestyle and factors determined by where and how we live.

HonorHealth’s Integrative Medicine Program offers a personalized, whole-person approach to care that empowers patients with the tools they need to prevent, treat and reverse chronic disease – the exact lifestyle that Ralph and Teresa have been living for decades.

After meeting with Shad Marvasti, MD, MHP, director of HonorHealth Integrative Medicine, the couple were inspired to invest in the program with hopes of expanding it even further.

Ralph believes that Western medicine is good, but there is more that can be done to improve our health span, which is a period of life where you’re able to do everything you want to do without limits from disease and medications.

Integrative medicine combines ancient healing practices with the latest breakthroughs in modern medicine. It seeks to tap into the innate ability of the body to heal itself by addressing the root cause of disease through a whole person approach that engages the mind, body and spirit.

A proud veteran of the Marine Corps, Ralph also embraced the HonorHealth Military Partnership Program with philanthropic support. It’s through philanthropy that HonorHealth is able to provide our dedicated service members and first responders with the training they need to dramatically improve the chances of survival for seriously injured soldiers and civilians.

Our donors are the architects and the imagination behind elevating the conditions of people and populations. As new donors to HonorHealth Foundation, Ralph and Teresa whole-heartedly believe that giving back is simply the right thing to do. Their passion for vibrant health and support of the movement toward collective well-being are an inspiration to us all.

And for that, we thank you, Ralph and Teresa!

The 49th Annual Phoenix 5K/10K and Half Marathon, presented by HonorHealth Foundation, returns Sunday, November 10

Run toward good health!

The 49th Annual Phoenix 5K/10K and Half Marathon, presented by HonorHealth Foundation, returns on Sunday, November 10!

Founded in 1976 by renowned Valley physician, Dr. Art Mollen, the event was originally run along the canals of North Phoenix. This year, with the Biltmore Fashion Park serving as the start and finish line, the trek heading north of 24th Street from Camelback will once again weave itself along the paths adjacent to these familiar waterways.

Dr. Mollen recently talked about the importance of exercise and longevity.

HHF: What do you tell people who say they want to live to be 100?

Dr. Mollen: The first thing I stress is longevity should focus on quality versus quantity. Focusing on the lifestyle habits that make you healthier and therefore offer a life of quality: diet, exercise, family connections and a positive mental attitude. Deliberate movement or exercise for 30 minutes a day to enhance the production of beta endorphins which increase a positive mental attitude and therefore resilience. Longevity is as much about a healthy mind as a healthy body. They go together.

Shad Marvasti, MD, MPH, is the director of HonorHealth’s Integrative Medicine Program and enthusiastically agrees with Dr. Mollen’s views on a “whole-person” approach to longevity and care.

“Our goal is to empower you with the tools you need to not just to live longer chronologically, but instead to improve your health span, which is the period of life where you’re able to do everything you want to do without limits from disease and multiple medications,” said Dr. Marvasti.

This year’s event benefits the HonorHealth Military Partnership Program. This unique program provides realistic, high-quality trauma medical training to military nurses and medics, as well as civilian first responders.

Highlights include:

  • A new staging venue, located at the spectacular Biltmore Fashion Park in midtown Phoenix
  • All new courses reminiscent of the rich traditions of the race, incorporating a combination of streets and canal banks for the Half Marathon and scenic streets for the 5K and 10K
  • Unique commemorative medals to all finishers
  • Custom-designed, blended fabric t-shirts
  • Awards to the male/female age group winners in the Half Marathon, 5K and 10K
  • A special "Beat Your Age" contest for all 10K entrants
  • Post-race party village with vendors, music and other fun attractions

Use the discount code: HONOR24 for 20 percent off your entry fee when you register for the race at 49th Annual Phoenix 5K/10K and Half Marathon.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a time dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer, supporting those affected and promoting the importance of early detection. This month serves as a reminder of the impact breast cancer has on countless lives and the vital role we can all play in the fight against this disease.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed among women, but it also affects men. When you see the pink ribbon, we hope it’s a good reminder to schedule regular mammogram screenings, which can lead to earlier detection, better treatment outcomes and ultimately, save lives.

Give her strength for the fight

While awareness is key, action is essential. This October, consider how you can contribute to the fight against breast cancer. HonorHealth Foundation has launched a $10 million campaign to renovate HonorHealth Cancer Care’s flagship location at the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center on the campus of HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea, where we treat more breast cancer patients in the valley than any other healthcare system.

This expansion will provide the resources needed to treat patients throughout their breast cancer journey:

  • Bring together the entire cancer medical team, which provides more opportunities for collaboration
  • Provide cutting-edge clinical trials that give patients more time with those they love
  • Attract even more compassionate, highly trained professionals
  • Create dedicated women’s infusion space to encourage a sisterhood of support, as patients share their stories during chemotherapy
  • Renovate and expand to meet the growing need for this level of care

But this isn’t only about a building or technology. It’s about our wives, sisters, mothers and friends. Let’s give her strength for the fight! Support from our community is vital to her healing. A gift to HonorHealth Cancer Care puts you right there in her circle of care, providing support to expand our comprehensive services for breast cancer patients.

There are many ways to give back this October:

  • Make a Donation: Gifts of any amount help advance care. You can even make a gift in tribute to your favorite fighter! Also, consider a monthly recurring gift to increase your impact.
  • Participate in our Breast Cancer Awareness Month events: See the link for the Macy’s Give Her Strength for the Fight Fashion Show and their “round up” event below for more information
  • Raise Awareness: Use your voice on social media to share information about your support of breast cancer fighters and the importance of donations.

On behalf of our patients and staff, thank you! What you contribute to the Foundation matters — every gift makes an impact. Every act of kindness elevates someone's healing journey.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Cathy collage

Meet Breast Cancer Fighter, Cathy

With no history of breast cancer in her family, Cathy was shocked by her diagnosis: Triple Negative, Stage 2, among the most aggressive breast cancers.

Cathy was quickly referred to HonorHealth Cancer Care and met her team, including an oncologist, breast surgeon, radiation oncologist and navigator. But her fight required even more.

On the day after Christmas, Cathy underwent a lumpectomy and breast reconstruction and started radiation a couple weeks later, followed by chemotherapy.

With a previous career as a pharmacist, Cathy had enough clinical knowledge to understand the odds of recovery, the toll chemo could take and that nutrition can make a big difference in how your body responds.

“All of the physicians and their team approach was very important to my outcome,” says Cathy, now five years cancer-free. “Just as important was the support I received from so many team members who helped me navigate this challenging time with a positive mental attitude. They introduced me to yoga and meditation classes, knitting, fitness and cooking classes as a way to support my own healing. A dietitian assisted me with my nutrition while on chemotherapy. Perhaps as a result, I experienced minimal side effects from chemotherapy.”

While attending the HonorHealth programs, Cathy met dozens of other cancer patients on a similar journey to her own.

“Patients observe and talk with to each other. This was invaluable — to share thoughts, concerns, fears and advice,” Cathy recalls. “The environment created at HonorHealth made the journey one of the more positive experiences in my lifetime. And one that can be replicated for others.”

PiA October 2024 Why DAF

Eric and Julie Keen

Meet HonorHealth Foundation supporters, Eric and Julie Keen, who enjoy supporting organizations and initiatives that have positive impacts on our communities through charitable giving. In 2023, they established a Donor Advised Fund as a way to help facilitate their family giving.

“The DAF allowed us to set significant funds aside for future giving projects and to access a team of professionals to help manage the funds and gifting process," Eric explains.

Directing some resources to a DAF allowed them to:

  1. Pay less in taxes that year by realizing an immediate charitable tax deduction.
  2. Provide time to think about what they wanted to support with those funds.
  3. Have more to give when they were ready, since DAF funds are invested and grow over time.

We are grateful for the purposeful giving that Eric and Julie have demonstrated.

If you have a DAF, please consider recommending to your financial advisor that they support the important work of HonorHealth Foundation, or learn more about how to support HonorHealth through a DAF.
