Expanding women’s health with an expert touch
Just a week ago we celebrated our mothers and mother figures. We see the women in our lives taking care of everyone around them but often ignoring or neglecting their own needs. We want women to know that their own health is important, too.
Our expansion of women’s health programs is dedicated to the mothers, sister, friends and future generations of women. Watch this video to learn more about HonorHealth women’s health programs.
HonorHealth Foundation raised $3.2 million through its signature gala, The Honor Ball, to benefit these essential programs:
Women’s Heart CareHonorHealth Heart Care is committed to providing exceptional cardiovascular care and improving the health and well-being of every woman who comes through our doors.
Our trusted women’s health providers offer in-depth cardiovascular care during pregnancy, as well as prevention and management of coronary heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmia, vascular and other forms of common and complex heart disease a woman may face in her lifetime.
Women’s Cancer CareRenovations to the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center’s second floor will consolidate gynecologic and breast oncology services, including a dedicated, private infusion space and services to meet the unique needs of women.
We will also create a collaborative, virtual breast oncology research environment in partnership with HonorHealth Research Institute.
Obstetrics/Labor & DeliveryPregnancy and childbirth are pivotal in a woman’s life and health. HonorHealth has one of the busiest labor and delivery programs in the state and is still growing.
Your donation supports an expansion of Labor and Delivery, couplet care and our newborn nursery at the Family Birthing Center at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center.
Women’s Behavioral HealthPostpartum issues can deeply impact a woman’s mental and emotional well-being, making women's behavioral health an essential focus during this critical time.
Maternal mental health screenings and a Postpartum Nurse Navigator will help oversee these services as part of the 4th trimester program. A similar program will be available to serve the behavioral health needs for women at any stage of life.
A journey of care, love and loss
Kevin and Tracy met in 1996 and spent the next two decades raising children, living their best lives and enjoying quality time together.
Both had successful careers: Kevin was a 20-year Air Force veteran who transitioned to aerospace engineering, while Tracy worked as an international business and marketing consultant for Silicon Valley companies.
Their lives changed forever when Tracy’s father entered hospice care after battling multiple myeloma for five years following a stem-cell transplant. At the same time, Kevin’s doctor delivered devastating news: Kevin had been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a life-threatening condition that required an urgent stem cell transplant. Without it, he was not expected to survive the year.
As partners in life, they made the decision to resign from their jobs within weeks, and Tracy became Kevin’s full-time caregiver.
They found their way to the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) team at HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Medical Center. Kevin was fortunate to find a donor match on the registry and underwent a successful stem cell transplant, which cured his MDS.
But their story doesn’t end here. Kevin developed severe graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) just 45 days post-transplant, requiring a feeding tube and was so weak, he had to use a wheelchair. For three years, Kevin received care from the BMT team and the countless nurses who “provided us with extraordinary support.”
Tracy reflects that over time, the care team became like family, sharing their struggles and even finding humor to lighten the moments.
“In some ways, they knew us more deeply than many of our friends and walked with us through our most difficult days,” she says. “The journey to HonorHealth Shea was a 45-mile drive from our home, and though we passed other hospitals on the way, I never doubted we were in the best hands. I felt profoundly grateful for the compassionate, expert care Kevin received from the team at Shea, knowing they were doing everything possible to support us through his complex and challenging illness.”
When the time came for Kevin to leave Shea and enter hospice care, the entire bone marrow team stopped to say goodbye, offering hugs and heartfelt words. Their doctor sat with Tracy in the hallway, sharing her wish that the outcome could have been different. Despite the profound loss, Tracy never doubted the depth of their care or their genuine love for her and Kevin.
“To this day, I cannot fully express my gratitude for everything the team at HonorHealth Shea did for us. This experience left an indelible mark on my heart,” Tracy says. “Their dedication and kindness will forever remain in my heart. To honor Kevin’s memory, I am working to create a philanthropic legacy at HonorHealth Foundation to ensure that others facing similar battles receive the same level of compassionate, world-class care.”

Celebrating HonorHealth nurses
We are proud of the more than 4,000 nurses who serve HonorHealth patients with commitment and expertise. And that’s not just our opinion.
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has consistently awarded HonorHealth hospitals their Magnet status, based on quality patient care, innovations in professional nursing practice and a culture that encourages nurse to grow professionally. Only six percent of hospitals nationwide earn this recognition and of the 10 Magnet-designated centers in Arizona, five are HonorHealth hospitals.
HonorHealth Foundation donors play an important role in advancing our nurses. Our supporters have funded continuing education scholarships, sponsored professional development programs and established an endowment to secure the future of excellent nursing.
