HonorHealth Foundation remembers 
Dr. James Schamadan, a visionary 
physician, leader and humanitarian 
whose life’s work helped shape 
healthcare in Arizona and lay the 
philanthropic foundation that advances 
our mission today. 
As CEO of Scottsdale Healthcare from 
1982 to 1999, he guided the early 
growth of what is now the HonorHealth 
Foundation, fostering a culture of 
generosity, innovation and community 
partnership. In recognition of his 
enduring contributions, he was named 
Foundation Trustee Emeritus in 1997.
Dr. Schamadan’s distinguished career 
spanned service as a military pilot 
and physician, engineering professor, 
global medicine consultant and 
healthcare executive. His leadership 
helped transform Scottsdale into a 
thriving healthcare community, always 
grounded in a deep commitment to 
service and expanding access to care. 
His legacy continues through the 
Schamadan Nursing Endowment, 
established in honor of his late wife, 
Janet, supporting the education and 
training of compassionate, skilled 
nurses. 
Dr. Schamadan’s life was defined by 
intellect, humility and service. His 
impact endures in the lives he touched 
and in the mission he helped build for 
generations to come.
